about

Anton Webern composed his ‘Langsamer Satz’ in June 1905. Translating literally as "Slow Movement”, the piece originated during a hiking trip in Austria that Webern took with his cousin, who later became his wife. It is love music, as Webern diarized ecstatically—an outpouring by the 21-year-old composer, whose studies with Arnold Schoenberg had begun the previous autumn.

The ‘Langsamer Satz' shows the sort of sophisticated thematic manipulation that became an integral component of Webern’s atonal and serial music.

!In traditional three-part form, the work utilizes two themes: a melody of broad arching phrases and a complementary motive of greater chromaticism, begun by the second violin. The central portion of the work is based on a rhapsodic theme in flowing triplets. An epilogue of quiet, floating harmonies closes this touching souvenir of Webern’s youth.
